The Basics of Astrology Part 2

Libra

Libra September 23 - October 23

Element: Air    Mode: cardinal

The Sign, Libra, in the natural Zodiac, is associated with the Seventh House, the Descendant; traditionalists view this as the House of Marriage and Partnership but it can also be viewed as The House of Open Enemies. The challenge is to overcome a fear of intimacy and either extreme dependence or fear of dependence. The task is to create a unique rapport, magic and equality between partners. Libra is -the- *Peacemaker* of the Zodiac. The first six signs of the natural zodiac deal with the development of personality on an individual level; Libra now starts the social awareness of the drama. Libra is indeed a diplomat and a lover of beauty and balance.  The symbol is the Scales on which all decisions are weighed; no other sign is as comfortable with paradox and so aware of the mutability of truth. This can sometimes make it quite difficult to make the simplest decisions.  A keyword here is equilibrium...more keywords: harmony, balance, consonance, and concord.

Scorpio

Scorpio October 23 - November 22

Element: Water     Mode: fixed

The Sign, Scorpio, in the natural Zodiac, is associated with the Eighth House, the House of Birth and Death, both primal transformations concerned with beginnings and endings. The challenge is to accept your own sexuality and to not fear transformation. The task is to create an acceptance of death and the integration of death's reality to daily life. Scorpio is -the- *Sorcerer* of the Zodiac.  Scorpio vitalizes Libra's social awareness; it concentrates and transforms it into a driving force. That force is sex, in all its social aspects. It is this energy that builds civilizations. The symbol is the Scorpion, an unpredictably fearsome creature of death, and your job is to deal with these fears head on! Scorpio has little patience for petty concerns; the aim is to live life as if everyday was the last. A keyword here is complexity... more keywords: determination, concentration, intensity

Sagittarius

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21

Element: Fire    Mode: mutable

The Sign, Sagittarius, in the natural Zodiac, is associated with the Ninth House, the House of Long Journeys. The challenge is to avoid habitual forms of experience and rigidity in thought. The task is to break up routines, create new patterns of behavior and to grasp a sense of evolving meaning and purpose. Sagittarius is -the- *Philosopher* of the Zodiac. Now it is Sagittarius's turn to assist the social awareness that Scorpio transformed.  Thusly Sagittarius is the social philosopher who establishes the rules and laws and social mores needed to help society function smoothly. The symbol is not the Archer itself but the Arrow speeding onwards and outwards directed. The arrow represents the seeking of knowledge and adventure; both inwardly and outwardly. A keyword here is expansion... more keywords: intuition, luck, activity, and directness

Capricorn

Capricorn December 21 - January 20

Element: Earth      Mode: cardinal

The Sign, Capricorn, in the natural Zodiac, is associated with the Tenth House, The Midheaven, and the House of Career. The challenge is to not become enmeshed and obsessed about your power, status, and appearance. The task is to create a personally satisfying status in the community, and a sense of fulfilling your destiny. Capricorn is -the- *Taskmaster* of the Zodiac. Beginning with the Winter Solstice, Capricorn now takes the rules established by Sagittarius and enforces them with the walls of Authority and creates the State. Your symbol is the Sea-Goat, a mythological creature of the imagination that can only truly live in dreams; you desire to succeed in your dreams. A keyword here is integrity...more keywords: perseverance, ambition, and prudence.

Aquarius

Aquarius January 20 - February 19

Element: Air    Mode: fixed

The Sign, Aquarius, in the natural Zodiac, is associated with the Eleventh House, the House of Friends. The challenge is to avoid drifting, and to make a commitment on some level. The task is to create realistic yet inspiring goals through a network of relationships that enhance and support the cause. Aquarius is -the- *Revolutionary* of the Zodiac. Now it is the time for Aquarius to kick the walls of State and Authority erected by Sagittarius and enforced by Capricorn. Thus emerges the reformer, madman, genius, and iconoclast. Aquarius breaks the rules for better or worse!  The symbol is the Water Bearer pouring healing knowledge onto the Earth. The glyph (the wavy lines) represents the serpents of knowledge. Much like the first serpent in the first garden, dispersal of this knowledge is apt to cause great social change. A keyword here is truth... more keywords: independence, spontaneity, and inventiveness

Pisces

Pisces February 19 - March 20

Element: Water     Mode: mutable

The Sign, Pisces, in the natural Zodiac, is associated with the Twelfth House, the House of Troubles. The challenge is to have a clear picture of you and to avoid the need to escape; not just with drugs or daily soap operas but also with anything that helps one avoid reality. The task is to create a freedom from the ups and downs of life by developing an awareness of higher levels of spiritual consciousness. Pisces is -the- *Mystic* of the Zodiac. Pisces now completes the Journey by wandering off into the desert and then emerging like a voice crying in the wilderness teaching the wisdom of transcendence.  Thusly the decks are cleared for the cycle to begin again in Aries. In Pisces we find Man standing alone and facing the Greater Mystery. The symbol is that of two Fish swimming in opposite directions through the *oceans*of life and are symbolic of the eternal mysteries. There is great potential for idealism; conversely there is great potential for the antithesis, which is social dissolution. A keyword here is poetic... more keywords: intuition, compassion, and sensitivity
